Exploring Information

  • Exploring is the young-adult program of Learning for Life, a subsidiary program of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Exploring is different from traditional Scouting programs in that its focus is on career interest exploration.
  • Exploring units, called posts, are run by a minimum of four volunteers from within the community businesses, agencies and organizations, usually specializing in each organization’s career fields.
  • Exploring is a dynamic, flexible program designed to help community organizations serve youth.
  • Exploring is a hands-on, educational, decision-making process.

WHO CAN JOIN EXPLORING?

  • Any young man or woman. Ages 14 through 20. A graduate of eighth grade.
  • Exploring is a co-educational program.

WHEN DO EXPLORING POSTS OPERATE?

  • Most Exploring posts meet once or twice a month throughout the school year during a time that is most convenient for its members and adult advisors. Post meetings are usually two hours in length.

WHERE DO EXPLORING POSTS MEET?

  • Exploring posts meet at each respective organization’s facilities.
  • Posts also meet at various other sites during field trips and tours depending on its activities.

WHY DOES EXPLORING WORK?

  • Exploring is successful because young people are curious about careers and want to work with adults who share their vocational interests.
  • Young people desire co-educational experiences, leadership opportunities, and hands-on activities.

HOW LONG HAS THE PROGRAM EXISTED?

  • Exploring has existed in its current form since April of 1971. At this time, young women became eligible for full membership and during the same year the upper age limit was extended to a member’s 21st birthday.

WHAT IS AN EXPLORER POST

  • Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop.
  • Explorer posts can specialize in a variety of career skills. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, service learning, character education, and leadership experience.

Post Specialties

Every Explorer post specializes in a specific career program area. More than 100 different specialties have been organized, ranging from accounting to zoology. Some specialty programs, such as the following, have grown to include a national committee, activities, and staff support.

Arts and Humanities

  • The Arts and Humanities specialty area includes posts that are organized around interests in arts and hobbies, actor/actress, commercial artist, drama/theater, fashion designer/model/buyer, interior designer/decorator, ,jeweler/watchmaker, and movie director/producer.

Aviation

  • The Aviation specialty encompasses a range of programs, including maintenance, operations, construction, flight attendants, airport management, and aerospace. The Federal Aviation Administration supports this growth, along with aviation organizations, unions, and industries.

Business

  • Through the Business specialty area, young adults become prepared for many types of careers, from accounting to financial planning. Many posts organize their program around knowledge of business planning and practices in addition to career preparation.

Communications

  • This specialty is endorsed by the Broadcast Education Association, International Association of Business Communicators, National Association of Broadcasters, National Press Photographers Association Inc., Public Relations Society of America, and Women in Communications. The Exploring program can serve as an effective outreach program that exposes high school students to careers in communications and public relations.

Engineering

  • Many national engineering societies endorse this specialty area of Exploring. Its goal is to promote post programs that open and expand Explorers ’ understanding of the many opportunities in engineering and technology.

Fire and Emergency Services

  • Program centered around fire and emergency services careers. Fire and Emergency Services Explorers might choose to visit fire schools, fire trade shows, musters, fire competitions, community presentation programs, first aid skills competition, and/or community disaster programs.

Health

  • Program centered on health careers. Health Explorers might choose to work with medical doctors, nurses, dentists, ophthalmologists, podiatrists, etc. They might participate in x-ray reviews and oral health exams and review equipment and procedures used to care for patients.

Law Enforcement

  • Program centered around law enforcement careers. Law Enforcement Explorers might choose to take part in crime prevention activities, community policing, traffic control, fingerprinting, ridealongs, patrol procedures, and connecting activities with high schools, court systems, and national, state, and local academies. The bottom line is that Law Enforcement Exploring is an action-oriented, hands-on, career discovery program.

Law and Government

  • Program centered on careers such as criminal law, civil law, environmental law, social and human services, etc.

Science Explorer

  • Programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of science, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.

Skilled Trades

  • Program centered on skilled trades careers. Skilled Trades Explorers might choose to try their hands at various careers or gain an in-depth knowledge of one specialty trade.
