Ordeal Weekend at Camp Roland


Our next opportunity for Fellowship, Fun, and growing our membership is just a few short weeks away. We will be hosting an Ordeal weekend in conjunction with a Badgoree at Camp Roland on July 12-14. This weekend will be a little different than our normal Fellowships To make sure that you are prepared and can make the most of your weekend, we wanted to provide you with the schedule for our fellowship and some final reminders. Please take the time to read through this so that you are fully informed.

General Information:

  • Arrowmen attending the Badgoree and eating with their Troop will only need to register and pay with the Badgoree administration. All Arrowmen are welcome to participate in work projects and ceremonies.  You will be able to purchase the event patch at our Takhonek Lodge Trading Post.

  • Arrowmen attending just for the Ordeal Weekend will need to register online and pay $15.This will include one event patch; you will receive your patch at registration. This event is not included in the Fox Pass.

Directions to Camp Roland:  9238 Grapefield Rd, Bastian, VA  24314

Start on I77 'between the tunnels' in Bland County, Virginia. Travel to BASTIAN (Exit 58). From exit 58, turn toward downtown Bastian (if coming from Wytheville, turn left at the ramp.  If coming from Bluefield, turn right at the end of the ramp). After you pass the Marathon gas station on your LEFT, turn LEFT at the stop sign and travel approx. 100 yards on US Route 52. After 100 yards, turn RIGHT on State Route 714.  After about 3 miles, look for a RED CABOOSE on your left.  Turn left down the gravel driveway just before reaching the caboose.

  • The Takhonek Lodge On-site check-in will take place on Friday evening, beginning at 6:00 pm in the dining hall. You will not be able to be directed to your campsite until this time, so please do not arrive prior to 6:00 pm.

  • Everyone should plan to bring their own tent for camping.

  • Work Projects will include installation of gaga ball ring, trail work, and more.

  • Tools needed bow saws, cordless drills, lawn rakes, pruning tools and chain saws if you have the current training. 

Here's a quick list of items you may want to bring with you:

  • Class A uniform with Sash

  • Class B uniform for work and recreation

  • Medical Form (Part A&B)

  • Good walking shoes that are appropriate for working

  • Work Clothing and Gloves

  • Gear appropriate for the weather, remember it is a camp

  • Money to purchase items at the trading post

  • Water Bottle

Ordeal Candidates

Items you will need to bring on the first night of your ordeal are a change of clothes, sleeping bag, tarp, water bottle, and health form. Your field uniform (Class A) will also be required for this weekend, but please do not wear your uniform on the first night.

On your second night you will need your regular camping supplies such as a tent, flashlight, etc.

Items prohibited for your first night are flashlights, lighters, phones, cameras, watches, and other items you may think you need other than those listed above. Please be prepared to stay until 11:00 am on Sunday for completion of your Ordeal.
