Purpose of the

The purpose of the Order of the Arrow has been set forth as follows:

  • To recognize those Scout campers (Scouts, Explorers and Scouters), who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition, cause other Scouts to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recognition.
  • To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
  • To promote Scout camping in the unit.
  • To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into life's purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.
Three principles embody the spirit of these high ideals:
  • Cheerful Service
  • Brotherhood
  • Camping
Through all of these principles, they permeate the foundation of the Order of the Arrow:
  • Leadership
This fourfold purpose is the very heart of the Order of the Arrow. Every member should be familiar with it. In it, you will find the secret of the growth of our Brotherhood, and its continued success. You, as a member, must adopt this fourfold purpose as your own, to guide you in your Scouting life. By working toward this end, you, and others with you will insure the success of the Brotherhood of which you are a part, and you will strengthen the spirit of Scouting so that it can continue to be the greatest youth movement in the world today.
