Our LOCAL Pack Family Pinewood Derby Race will be SAT, DEC 1, 10 AM - 1 PM @FUMC! Cars will be judged (within Dens) for best design & top speed! The top speed winners of each Den will advance to the District Race in March. Our OVERALL winner will advance to the Council Race in April. We will also have an “Outlaw Race” for adults & siblings (wt different rules). Contact your Den Leader about specific electives your scout can earn with this Derby Car Project!

2018 CUB SCOUT FAMILY NOTES

 

  • All Den Meetings are held @First UMC each Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 PM, (September-May) unless designated for a “Pack Adventure” OR School is dismissed early/cancelled.Remember:“NO school, NO scouts!”Our Pack “Flag Ceremony” begins promptly 6:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall.

     

  • Contact Leaders BEFORE 6:30 PM or AFTER 7:30 PM so we can begin/end meetings on time!Note Contact Info listed on the Pack Calendar.

     

  • An ADULT must attend with your scout!(Arrange for another adult to attend with your scout if you cannot attend.)Cub Scouting is FAMILY Scouting!We welcome BOTH boys & girls (Grades 1-5) to participate & earn awards with the BSA “Scout Me In” program.All adults will assist Den Leaders as boys/girls separate into small groups to work on Scout Adventures.Also, assist with set-up/clean-up for meetings/outings!Please complete a “Family Talent Survey,” showing us how you can best serve.

     

  • Cub Scouts serve as LEADERS!Dens rotate each month to lead the Pack “Flag Ceremony.” Wear “Class-A” Uniforms during that month.Some Dens elect their own “Denners” or “Patrol Leaders” to assist.All scouts rotate leadership until everyone participates.Contact your Den Leader beforehand to be prepared.

     

  • Bring your SCOUT HANDBOOK every meeting, AND contact your Den Leader when you cannot attend! Attend as many meetings/outings as possible to receive credit for Rank advancement.Even if scouts did something similar in the past, they must complete requirements THIS YEAR (June 2018 - May 2019)!Also, some events occur ONLY ONE TIME each year.As warm/fair weather wanes, we are limited to do OUTDOOR Adventures during early fall & late spring.We encourage ALL scouts to finish Rank requirements soon after January 1, and then focus on Indoor Electives & home/online assignments during bad weather.

     

  • Meet with your Den Leader each week to review completed homework & sign-off in your Handbook.Review Rank Requirements BEFORE or SOON AFTER missing a Den Meeting or Event to make arrangements on how to complete missed work. (Some requirements are difficult to do on your own as a family.)Scouts may receive credit for instruction/activities completed @home or school by taking a picture to receive credit.Also, consult your Den Leader BEFORE “working ahead” as plans may be already in place to do activities during a den meeting/outing.If your scout participates in “seasonal sports” or has “special needs,” privately discuss how your scout can best complete requirements.Visit www.scouting.orgExternal Link, www.buckskin.orgExternal Link, www.boyscouttrail.comExternal Link & www.cubscoutideas.comExternal Link to get ideas!

     

  • YOUTH PROTECTION & CYBER SAFETY is a top priority!ALL ADULTS who regularly attend must complete the NEW “Youth Protection Training” online BEFORE OCT 1, 2018 (repeated every 2 years).Go to http://my.scouting.orgExternal Link to create your login name & password.Watch all 3 video modules (total 60 min) & pass test. Print certificate OR email it to [Click for member's page].We also encourage adults who regularly attend to support Youth Protection by officially joining BSA.(See Chris for details.)ALL SCOUTS must complete or renew their BSA “Cyber Chip” online EVERY YEAR to make Rank.Go to http://www.netsmartz.org/scoutingExternal Link to view requirements for each grade.Help your scout create a login name & password to watch video & play games (total 30-45 min).Print completion certificate.Contact your Den Leader if you need assistance or do not have internet access.Also, ALL FAMILIES must discuss their own “Youth Protection Plan” with their scouts each year, as advised in the Youth Protection: A Parent’s Guide (blue booklet in front of Handbook).You may also borrow Family Youth Protection DVDs to view & discuss @home.

     

  • ALL SCOUTS & ADULTS must complete BSA HEALTH FORMS (Parts A-B, front/back) each year, even if you are a returning scout family! (Complete Part C with a Physical only if attending a resident camp.) Notify Chris & your Den Leader if anyone in has an allergy or other immediate health concerns.

     

  • ADULTS are responsible for their scouts!Remind your scout to stay with an assigned “buddy,” den or family!N0 WANDERING AWAY!Ask permission to visit the restroom or leave the group, take a buddy with you and return promptly.NO RUNNING unless given permission during an activity.Remain DOWNSTAIRS @First UMC during meetings, and NEVER go outside First UMC unsupervised!

     

  • Check our DISPLAY TABLE every week for Calendars, Forms, Announcements & Clip-Board “Sign-ups.”Turn-in all money/forms by due date!Read EVENT DETAILS on the back of the Calendar.Add our events to your personal calendar, and keep our Scout Calendar handy for easy reference @home.We will post the Calendar on our website & closed FB Group each month for quick reference.

     

  • UPDATE ALL CONTACT INFO!Notify Patrice & your Den Leader HOW & WHEN to best contact you!Request to join our CLOSED Facebook Group, “Cub Scouts Pack 61” to receive the latest Pack 61 news & info!Share photos of scouts with this FB Group so families can “tag” themselves.Let us know ASAP if someone cannot be photographed or shared on the internet!Leaders will communicate electronically via this FB Group, Den Groups on FB Messenger, and group emails.Meeting reminders are posted each week with our FB Group no later than NOON each Tuesday.Check our FB Group for any last minute updates as weather suddenly changes! Notify leaders if you prefer a personal text or phone call.

     

  • T-Shirts/Uniforms: Purchase a BLUE Pack 61 T-Shirt ($10) for EVERY person who regularly attends outdoor adventures & Den meetings!Contact Patrice to order T-shirts.Purchase a CLASS-A UNIFORM for EVERY SCOUT!Younger scouts need a BLUE “Class-A” Shirt, belt for loops, & pocket holder for Rank patches.Webelo Scouts need a TAN “Class-A” Shirt (& shoulder colors for pins) as they transition into a Boy Scout Troop.ALL Handbooks, “Class-A” supplies & insignia may be purchased online OR from H&V Sporting Goods, 102 East Front Street, Richlands, VA (276-963-2415 or 276-963-2403).They can help you purchase the correct BSA Patches for Pack 61 in Buckskin Council.SEW these patches onto your uniform with clear thread as illustrated in the Handbook or online. (Chris will award Rank Adventure Loops/Pins & Patches.)Ask Chris if she has old shirts that scout families have donated.Also, check-out the Public FB Group, “Cub Scout/Boy Scout Uniform Exchange” to get great deals!Scouts will proudly wear “Class-A Uniforms” during the Veteran’s Day Parade, Pack events, field trips & ceremonies.Donate your outgrown shirts for future scouts!

     

  • Scouts will earn many AWARDS!Most Scout belt loops, pins, patches, etc. may be displayed on your scout’s Class-A Uniform as illustrated in the Handbook or https://cubscoutideas.com/1276/cub-scout-uniform-patch-placement/External Link.Keep ALL Awards in a safe place if you do not display them on the Class-A Uniform.Get ideas online how to display your scout awards @home.

     

  • “Helpful Hints” to organize SCOUT WORK:Purchase “Tabs” to label various “Sign-off” pages in your Handbook.Also, use a pencil to mark what is complete on the “Adventure Tracking System” (back of Handbook).Older scouts may bring a small notebook/pocket folder for your handouts or Adventure Booklet during Den meetings & home assignments.Use a small backpack or tote to carry your Handbook & supplies.

     

  • Participate in FUNDRAISING!Help Pack 61 fundraise at least $50/Scout per year to offset the cost for Scout Awards/Patches, Derby cars/trophies, food for Pack events/outings, BSA “Re-Charter” Fees in March, etc.

Pack 61 participates in the Fall BSA Popcorn Sale.  Parents may assist Chris with a Bake Sale, Hotdog Sale or Yard Sale.  Contact Chris if you have items to donate or want to sponsor a fundraiser!  ALSO, SAVE CLEAN ALUMINUM for VH Holmes & Sons Recycling, & tell Mark Smith to credit money for Cub Scout Pack 61.  Contact Patrice for more info.  We accept DONATIONS if you choose not to participate in fundraising.
