RACE DAY SCHEDULE

Charleston Town Center Mall on Saturday, April 12.  The Pinewood Derby registration will be held on the 1st. floor of the mall in front of Macy’s Dept. Store. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the championship race will start at 11:00 a.m. All District’s 1st., 2nd., and 3rd. place winners along
with each packs 1st. place winner are eligible to compete in the CHAMPIONSHIP RACE. Each District and Pack needs to verify their winners with their District Executive and phone those winners names to the Scout Service Center by April 10. After the championship race, there will be an open race.  The race is open to any scout, Scouter, or Scouter family member who wants to race. No cars used in the championship race will be allowed to race in the open race. Mark your calendars; start whittling on your pinewood derby cars, wear good sportsmanship and HAVE FUN.

Official Rules

 
RACE DAY CHECK-IN: RACE CATEGORY RULES: SHOW CATEGORY RULES:
  1. All cars must be registered and receive an official registration number.
  2. After registration, each car must pass inspection/weigh-in prior to racing. All cars will be impounded immediately following the inspection/weigh-in.
  3. Weight may be subtracted at weigh-in. No weight may be added!
  4. Once impounded, only the registered racer of a car will be permitted to handle the car.
  5. Cars cannot be modified or lubricated after impoundment. Any racer that re-lubricates, adds weight, or otherwise alters a car during the race will immediately be disqualified.
  6. Only Race Officials and Racers will be permitted in the track and impound areas.

  1. Race event winners will be determined by a Double-Elimination Race. Each car must lose at least two heats before being eliminated from the race.
  2. 1st Place, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place Winners will be recognized and awarded trophies as well as the advertised prizes for each place.
  3. Heat results will be determined by a computerized timing system. Judges will monitor the computerized results. Judges may or may not decide to use the computerized results for confirmation or to resolve close finishes.
  4. Judges or Race Officials, at their discretion, may decide to re-run a heat.
  5. If a car is damaged during the race then 5 minutes will be given at the beginning of that car’s next heat to make repairs. Repaired cars must re-pass inspection/weigh-in prior to racing. Repairs will not include re-lubrication.
  6. If a car jumps the track then that heat will be rerun. If the same car jumps the track during the rerun, then that car will be considered last place.
  7. Good Sportsmanship will be observed by all participants. Participants will be disqualified for un-sportsmanlike behavior.

 

  1. All car kit parts must be used. At least three wheels must be on the ground supporting the car.
  2. Additions, attachments or other embellishments must be off the ground and firmly attached to the car.
  3. Show Category event winners will be determined by a panel of judges.
  4. 1st Place, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place Winners will be recognized and awarded trophies as well as the advertised prizes for each place.
  5. Judges will evaluate and choose winning cars based on originality of design, craftsmanship, and creative artistic merit.
  6. Race Officials reserve the right to disqualify any car that presents a design, message, or conveys an idea that is not consistent with the Boy Scout Oath, Scout Law, and/or ideals of Scouting.

Note: Any Participant may appeal to the Race Committee for an interpretation of these rules.

By a majority vote, the Race Committee will be the final judge of these rules. The Race Committee Chairperson will decide all tie votes.

Race Official decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

All participants consent video and photographic recording of the event by the Buckskin Council, Boy Scouts of America, and agree that the Council may use any images in future promotions.

Official Car Specifications
 
PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS: AXLES & WHEELS:
  • Body Width: 2 ¾ inches.
  • Length: Not over 7 inches.
  • Weight: Not over 5 ounces.
  • Bottom Clearance: At least 3/8 inches between car and track.
  • Car height must not exceed the height of any detectors that cross above the finish line. Heights should be less than 3 inches.
  • No car details, add-ons, decals, etc. may exceed physical dimensions.
  • Front-edge of the car must rest against starting peg so that 100% of the car is behind the peg.

  • Only Official Boy Scout Pinewood Derby nails and wheels are permitted (see Materials).
  • Axle grooves may be re-cut or replaced with holes drilled into the car body.
  • Axles may be attached anywhere along the side of the car body as long as the wheel placement does not exceed overall physical dimensions.
  • Axle nails may be de-burred and polished. No other axle modifications are permitted.
  • NO modifications are allowed to the wheels. If the wheels supplied in the kit are out-of-round or otherwise defective then consider purchasing additional Official BSA Wheels.
  • At least three wheels must touch the track surface at all times.
  • No painting of wheels nor added lettering of wheels is permitted.
  • No one-piece axles are permitted – only those supplied in the Official Kit
OTHER SPECIFICATIONS: MATERIALS:
  • No springs are permitted.
  • No magnets are permitted.
  • No wet paint on cars permitted.
  • No starting devices of any kind are permitted. Cars must be free-wheeling.
  • No wheel bearings, washers, covers, or bushings are permitted.

  • Cars must be built from materials in the Official Boy Scout Pinewood Derby Kit.
  • Only Official Boy Scout Pinewood Derby nails and wheels are permitted.
  • Structural strength must be provided by the pinewood body. No metal or plastic frames nor metal or plastic axle supports are permitted.
  • Design can be enhanced by adding wood, wood filler, or plastic/metal decorations.
  • No loose materials of any kind are allowed on/in the car.
  • Absolutely no hazardous materials (e.g. mercury) are allowed on nor inside the car. Lead may be used for weight.

 

LUBRICANTS:  
  • Only dry powder graphite or dry powder Teflon type lubricants are permitted.
  • NO liquid or wet lubricants are permitted. NO silicone spray is permitted. NO Teflon tape permitted.
  • No lubricant can be added to a car after inspection and weigh-in.
  • No lubricant can be added to a car in association with any judge approved repair sessions.
Note: Any Participant may appeal to the Race Committee for an interpretation of these rules.
