Adventure
West
Virginia

Adventure West Virginia is a high adventure program based out of beautiful Pocahontas County, West Virginia. This program is designed for older scouts and will offer a challenge to those that are experienced while allowing beginners to participate. It exposes participants to a variety of high adventure activities and allows for custom-designed side trips. A standard week includes: hiking, mountain biking, caving, and whitewater rafting. The program is open to experienced and non-experienced scouts, Scouters, and Venture crew members.

Hiking the Allegheny Trail

Participants will have the opportunity to hike between 10 and 15 miles of the Allegheny Trail.  The Allegheny Trail runs across the entire state and crosses through Buckskin Scout Reservation property.  The trail offers a variety of terrains, elevation, and views.

Mountain Biking

Cranberry Glades Nature Preserve

Participants will begin the ten-mile ride from the Cranberry Glades Nature Center on a flat single-track trail before racing downhill over hills, rocks, and roots on their way to the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area.  This trip will challenge even the more experienced riders and may cause some difficulty for beginners.  Riders can expect rough terrain, mud, and the occasional meadow of high grasses.  The trail includes spectacular views and an assortment of flora and fauna.  Participants will have the opportunity to visit the boardwalk through the glades.

Caving at Lost World Caverns

This commercialized cave offers a four to five hour “Wild Tour” that will have participants crawling on their knees and stomachs and offer the occasional large room with beautiful cave formations.  Everyone is guaranteed to get muddy and wet.  Optional passages allow participants the opportunity to squeeze and contort their bodies through the narrowest openings.

Whitewater Rafting

New River with Class 6 Outfitters

Class 6 Outfitters will take participants racing down the lower New River over rapids ranging from Class 1 to Class 5.  Participants should expect a wild ride full of large waves, bumps, and the occasional man overboard.  The ten to fifteen mile trek will take riders underneath the largest single span steel bridge in the western hemisphere, the New River Gorge Bridge.  The six hour trip provides excitement, wonderful views, and the chance to ride rapids out of the raft.  Fun for beginners while exciting for those with rafting experience.

Optional Side Trips for Additional Cost

Rock-climbing on Nelson’s Rock Via Ferreta

Horse-back riding to top of Seneca Rocks

Additional trip to local cave

Visit to historic Civil War Battlefield (Droop Mountain)

Warning!

While Buckskin Council and its contract agencies strive for the safety of participants, these activities have an inherent level of danger.  Participants and legal guardian may be required to sign liability waivers for individual activities.
