BUCKSKIN COUNCIL NYLT

July 19 - 24, 2008 at Camp Chief Logan, a week long outdoor training experience for youth members in troops utilizing the patrol method. The age limit for (NYLT) is 12 years old and older and there is no limit on the number of patrol leaders a troop can send to the training.

What is the course? The Buckskin Junior Leader Training course is a 7 day outdoor experience for youth leaders in support of the Scoutmaster’s responsibility for training of his troop’s junior leaders. It is conducted by the Council leadership training committee based on an outline approved by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America.

What is its purpose? The course has three aims. First is to give each participant a varied experience in Scout craft skills that can be shared with the members of his patrol and troop. The second is to relate his patrol or troop job to the 11 personal leadership situations. The third is to give participants a chance to relate to leaders from other troops for an exchange of ideas and experiences.

Who may attend? Course participants should be either senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, or a Scout likely to assume one of these positions soon. Participants must be at least 13 years old upon arrival at camp. The Scout must be at least 1st Class in Rank and have participated in seven days and nights of camping (preferably long term).

Is the home Scoutmaster involved? Very much so. The course is intended to strengthen the relationship between the junior leader and his Scoutmaster. Scoutmasters are most strongly urged to bring their participating junior leaders to the conference and pick them up at the conclusion. A special orientation will be given to the home Scoutmaster on the opening day and follow-up report given on the final day.

What is the location? The course will be held at Camp Chief Logan, Chapmanville, West Virginia.

What is the cost? The cost for the course is $125.00 if paid by May 11 and $150.00 after May 11. This includes all food, camping equipment, and training materials. Scouts may wish to bring a small amount of spending money for the trading post. A deposit of $25.00 per Scout should accompany the troop’s reservation with the balance sent no later than May 11.

Is any special equipment needed? An equipment list will be sent to each participant when his reservation is received. Most Scouts participating in an active troop outdoor program will have the needed equipment. The official Scout uniform is required and participants should see that badges and insignia are properly placed and that the uniform is worn correctly.
