Zoology Zone Science Center, Hurricane, WV
November 8, 2025
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Shawnee District is hosting a visit to the Zoology Zone Science Center at Valley Park in Hurricane, WV on Saturday, November 8, 2025. The fun begins at 10:00 am and runs until 2:00 pm.
Troops can visit and work on requirements for Reptile and Amphibian Study, and Insect Study merit badges under Gerry Stover’s guidance. Insect Study will be a partial as Scouts need to observe 20 species and make a scrapbook of photos and information they collect. Gerry has a limited number of Madagascar Hissing cockroaches those working on Insect Study can take home and raise—with parental approval. This is optional, but it could help with research for requirement 9b.
The event is open to Cub Scouts as well. The Zoology Zone strives to inspire wildlife and environmental conservation through hands-on education. Scouts will learn the importance of each species and how to show them proper care. Some of the topics covered do pertain to elective adventures of the older Cub Scout ranks, which participating Cubs can get credit for. The primary goal, though, is to have fun, and spark curiosity.
Thanks to a generous sponsor, this event is free. Space for the merit badges is limited, so you will need to register on the Council website. Walk-ins are welcome, but space in the merit badge session is not guaranteed if you do not register.
