The “Family Troop” option has been approved and becomes available to all chartering organizations as a third option on December 15th, 2025. Troops will continue to be able to organize as boy troops and girl troops. The National Scouts BSA Committee has prepared an Intent to Convert form for all troops intending to convert to the family troop model.
With enormous gratitude for their work, the troops participating in the combined troop pilot may continue to operate as family troops. At this time, all “hold” troops in the pilot do not need to be rechartered.
If pilot troops would like to continue using the pilot combined/family model, your combined pilot troops should now convert from pilot troops to family troops using the Intent to Convert form. Your unit should submit the Intent to Convert forms to your council registrar. They are for local use only; do NOT send them to the National Office. You may drop your pilot "hold" unit at this time. If you have already rechartered your "hold" unit for 2026, contact the council.
If you would like to revert to your pre-pilot boy and girl troops, please use the Converting from a Family Troop and work with your local council registrar to process the change.
We would like to share our deep gratitude to troops for their willingness to pilot this model. Your enthusiastic participation and your thoughtful feedback have had a deep impact on the Scouts BSA program. We are incredibly hopeful that this new option meets your needs and helps you deliver the Scouting mission in a more impactful way to the youth you serve.
A Klondike Derby is a winter Scouting event where patrols pull homemade sleds between stations, completing challenges that test Scout skills, like first aid, knots, fire-building, and teamwork.
Who can participate in the Klondike Derby? Registered Scouts BSA and adults can participate in the Klondike Derby. Scouts participate as patrols. The minimum number of Scouts in a patrol is five; the maximum number of Scouts in a patrol is nine. Units with fewer than five Scouts can combine with Scouts from another unit.
The Klondike Derby will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The day begins with a flag ceremony, at 8:30 a.m., and concludes with an awards ceremony, at 7:45 p.m. Scouts BSA units can camp on Friday night, February 27, and/or on Saturday night, February 28. All participants should plan to depart the Summit by 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
The 2026 Tundra Trailblazer Trek Klondike Derby will be held at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, Base Camp Bravo. Driving directions to Base Camp Bravo will be provided at the North Gate.

December is a time for families and friends to gather and enjoy the spirit of the holidays. During this season every community comes alive with holiday lights. In celebration of the holidays, Buckskin Council will send a special Holiday Lights Celebration patch to Scouts who submit a picture of themselves attending a holiday lights display.
To earn your patch, find a holiday lights display near you and go see it with your den, pack, troop, or family. Take a picture of your Scout in front of the display and send it us.
We'd love to see you proudly wear your Scout uniform!
Submit your picture below or send it to bill.bryant@scouting.org. We will send you our special Holiday Lights Celebration patch for participating. (Parents and Guardians, if you don't want your child's picture published please let us know when you submit it. Don't worry, your scout will still get a patch!)
