STEM @ The Summit
What is STEM @ the Summit?
STEM at the Summit is an immersive program that allows Scouts and Venturers to explore the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics aspects of the outdoor adventures they love—and then use what they have learned!
Our goal is to integrate STEM with adventures at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. For example,
participants will:
• Calculate how fast you go down a zip line based on its angle and your size
• Figure out how a rock-climbing fall does not cause injury by deconstructing an auto belay
• Experiment at night with liquid nitrogen and other fun chemicals
• Earn the rare Summit Nova Award
Who Can Participate?
STEM at the Summit is open to all registered Scouts BSA and Venturers. A separate, concurrent program will be offered for Scouters (adults) to explore ways to integrate and emphasize STEM activities and concepts in their unit, district, and council-level programs. The program begins at 12:00 p.m. on July 12, and concludes at 5:00 p.m. on July 14.
Where Can I Learn More?
STEM at the Summit hosts a Web site, located at stematsummit.org. Visit the site to learn more and to register for the program. Contact coordinator Lisa
Balbes, Ph.D., at lisa@balbes.com or 314-283-3203, with program questions.
Contact the Summit, at 304-465-2800, with registration questions.
The cost to participate in this program is $250.00 for youth or adult participants. This fee includes all programs, tent, cot, food,
patch, and other expenses. Participants and their families may also elect to stay in other available lodging at the Summit
Bechtel Reserve (options include “glamping” tents in Family Adventure Camp and dormitory rooms), for an additional cost.
